6 Myths About Launching in Your Business (and the REAL Truth Behind Them)
Launching has gotten a really bad rap.
What used to be viewed as a really cool thing to do in your business, now is often viewed as a daunting endeavor that many business owners are avoiding.
As a launch copywriter and strategist, this honestly makes me sad because I’ve personally experienced and seen firsthand what a successful launch can do for your business.
And no, I don’t just mean “successful” in terms of revenue.
Although that’s a huge factor for many of my launch clients, there’s so much more that launches bring to the table and avoiding them in your business could be causing you to miss out on all the good that’s possible.
If you’ve been toying with the idea of launching in your business, but have yet to commit, it may be because you’re believing one of these six myths.
In this blog post, I’ll be debunking six common launch myths and provide some real truth behind each one so you can make the decision to launch in your business based on facts, not feelings.
6 Common Myths About Launching in Your Business
- Myth #1: My email list is too small and I don’t have enough followers to launch.
Truth: Your vanity metrics don’t determine the success of your launch.
While having a large email list or a social media following can certainly be beneficial, it’s not the sole thing that will yield launch results.
When it comes to your audience – whether that be via email or your social media platforms – quality trumps quantity every single time.
I’ve personally worked with people who have THOUSANDS of followers on social media, yet only a handful of them were actually ideal leads. This means that only a select few were truly interested when they decided to launch in their business, so it’s very clear that those numbers don’t have as much impact as you might think.
You’re much better off with a smaller list or smaller following filled with engaged ideal people than a large number of people that aren’t interested.
Regardless of how large or small your list or following is, you want to focus on nurturing relationships with your existing subscribers and followers, providing value, and building a genuine connection with them!
This will ensure that when it’s time to launch, they’ll already be engaged and excited for your launch, too.
- Myth #2: I have to show up on camera and that’s intimidating.
Truth: Introverts can have successful launches, too!
Trust me when I say, I GET IT. I am one of you. Showing up online with your hair fixed, lipgloss on, ready to talk to people on the Internet – sheesh, I need a nap just reading that.
That’s why the good news is that launching doesn’t require you to become a camera superstar if it doesn’t align with your personality or strengths. There are other ways to launch than just video style content, like webinars and masterclasses.
If you’re an introvert that doesn’t love the idea of showing up on camera, you can leverage other communication channels, such as written content with email based launches, audio only content with private podcasts, or other forms of launch events to connect with your audience.
Authenticity is key during a launch, so I always encourage clients to choose a medium that allows them to show up confidently while also showcasing their expertise and ultimately connecting with their audience comfortably.
- Myth #3: You have to spend money on ads for launches to work and I can’t do that right now.
Truth: Many of my clients DON’T run ads for their launches right away and still experience massive results.
Can ads amplify your launch by generating new, fresh leads? You bet! But they aren’t the only path to success.
Organic strategies, such as email marketing, social media engagement, and collaborations can and DO generate significant results without a hefty ad budget!
In fact, I always encourage clients to start with all of their organic pieces first. When you learn how to do those things well, you can play with ads later.
For now, focus on creating valuable and shareable content, leverage your existing network, and engage with your audience authentically to maximize your launch’s impact.
- Myth #4: Evergreen funnels work better than live launching.
Truth: It’s hard to create a successful evergreen funnel BEFORE live launching.
I hear this one ALL. THE. TIIME.
And I really do understand why. Evergreen funnels promise that passiveness that every business owner wants.
“Automate everything and watch the sales flood in.”
“Sell in your sleep.”
It’s a business owner’s dream, right? I hear you and I want that for you – I really do!
But how could you possibly automate something without knowing if it works first?
Live launching is the KEY to a successful evergreen funnel in the future because you learn what messaging, what offer, and what price works for people… and what doesn’t.
When you live launch, you learn a LOT about your audience and your offer, which gives you the opportunity to make tweaks and finetune every single part of the launch.
It’s like the ultimate experiment that leads to MAJOR business epiphanies, so without live launching first, you run the risk of automating something that doesn’t work at all.
If creating an evergreen funnel is your end goal, I’m all for that and I’ll even help you get there – but I’d never suggest that you start there first.
- Myth #5: My offer needs to be perfect before I can launch it.
Truth: Striving for perfection can lead to never launching at all.
While you of course want to make sure that the bones of your offer is there so you can provide value and a quality product or service, waiting for perfection can result in a lot of missed opportunities.
As mentioned above, launching allows you to learn a LOT so you can know exactly what needs to be tweaked or fixed for the future.
When you launch, you have the chance to gather valuable feedback from people that buy (and those who don’t), refine your offer accordingly, and make overall improvements based on what your audience tells you.
My best advice is to embrace a “good enough to launch” mindset, knowing that you can iterate and enhance your offer later!
- Myth #6: Launching is overwhelming and confusing.
Truth: Launching *CAN* feel overwhelming and confusing if you don’t have a tried and true process to follow from start to finish.
This is especially true if you’re brand new to launching, but with proper planning and a clear strategy, the launch process quickly becomes exciting and energizing!
One of the biggest mistakes that I see people make when launching that leads to a TON of overwhelm is not giving themselves enough time to plan a launch well.
